About This Chapter
The scene opens with a flashback to the beginning of the novel, when the narrator is a young boy who has just arrived at his father's house. The narrator tells his father that he has a crush on the boy's subordinate, who is also a young man. The boy, who has not yet come to live with his father, tells the narrator that his crush is "perversely longing" for his father. He tells the boy that the boy is his subordinate at work, not his friend. He also tells the young man that he sprained his hand when the boy ran out the door. The young man says that he was in such a hurry to get to the hospital that he slipped and injured his left hand as he ran away from the house. He says that his father is sleeping on top of him, and that he is "night mare" against his neck. He accuses his father of sleeping on his knees, and he says he is kicking his father out of his bed. He asks the boy to tell him what has happened, and the boy tells him to trust him after he had "out of line with his manly urges before." The boy says he was hoping his father would give him a mission, and then he creaks and twitches and asks his father to stop. He wants to kiss him, but he says his mind resists him, so he asks him to put something in him. He then asks why his father left a mark on him. His father says that they are still in the hospital, and they will have their discharge examination soon
