The narrator begins this chapter by looking into the eyes of the two students who have just arrived at the school. He says that they are beautiful, and he is jealous that they were able to see them smile so close to each other. The narrator says that he does not know how to express his emotions, and that he is afraid that the crowd will make him feel bad. The two students are subaru and kaori, and the narrator tells them that he admires them both greatly. He also says that his pride in the class is due to the fact that he has met subaru, who is the third tri-mester of the class. They have met for the very first time when they were asked to show each other around the school grounds. They had been asked to do so by the teacher, who asked them to talk about the upcoming term's monarch. They were surprised to find out that the monarch has special privileges among the students, and they are eager to be the next monarch.
