In this chapter, we are introduced to the "Nurturing Clan" and its leader, the "Expert Nurturing Scholar" . We learn that the Scholar is accepted into the clan, but that he will not be allowed to leave the school until the ceremony is over. He asks the Scholar if he can deal with the problem on his own, but the Scholar replies that only after he has entered the clan will he be able to do so. He tells the Scholar that he has enough food for the Scholar until the end of the ceremony, and the Scholar hopes that he is not a glutton
