About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he used to work as a prostitute in a brothel. He says that he enjoyed it at first, because he was pleasing his clients when things got bad. He explains that there are "truths" to the mermaid legends, such as "sacrificing our voices" to grow legs. When clients get bored, they start "trying to escalate" . There are some clients, he says, who have been "meat" , eating mermaid. The narrator explains that he escaped through the pipes of the brothel and found a passageway leading to the brothel's rooms. The passageway leads to the owner's room. The mermaids' rooms are connected to brothels, he explains, so they have water tanks in them. When he escapes, he finds a passageway to the outside of the shop. He finds a creak in the pipes and finds a way to get in through the passageway. The owner is a "screaming son" of a business. He tells the narrator to "take a creak" of his son's business, and the mermaids will be glad to hear of it. He then tells the story of how he and the other mermaids tried to catch "those dumb bitches" who thought they could "live in the city" when they couldn't walk on the streets. He thinks that the rumors were "right on the money" and that if they were caught, the owner would "just replace ments" and others would suffer.
