Sitting in a bar, the narrator laments the fact that he is in love with a man whom he does not know. He asks the bartender to teach him everything he needs to know in order to be a successful reporter. The bartender, however, is not interested in teaching him anything. He is interested only in finding out about the story that he has already written. The narrator asks him to whisper to him how dedicated he is to his work. He feels something inside him that is slowly moving him away from death. He goes on to say that he will be happy to tell him the story later at the hotel. He wonders if the man driving him is a police dog. He runs out to the hotel and sees a car leaving the lot. He takes a cab and goes to the police station to report the incident. The police chief tells him to be careful, but the narrator says he should head back to the bar. He gives the bartender advice for doing the job.
