In the meantime, the three hands have formed an army of "almost invincible warriors" and are ready to attack the city of Carthaginus. The captain, however, is not so sure. He feels that the "cursed stump" has been speaking to him and that a terrible storm has formed out of nowhere. He tells delenius that the general is returning from his victory over the Persians and that there is one "major unexpected event": the apparition of the queen. The queen has been seen with the eagle and her band, invisible to all but the eagle. The apparition has tried to strike him down by thought, but the captain knows better than to try to enslave the "mighty moundhir the harth" even his spirit. He decides that he will try to convince the queen to join him in attacking the city.
