About This Chapter
The next day, the women go to the grotto to dig up the statue. They find it covered in blood, and the men have cut their throats. The women tell the men that they have no idea who gave it to them, and they ask the men if they want to help them. The men tell them that they don't need their help, but the women insist that they do. They also tell the women that if they do not want their help or protection, they should tell the soldiers that they are not interested in their work. They ask the soldiers if they would like their help if they didn't want it. The soldiers say that they would do anything for the women, but they are afraid of losing the temple or the palace if they did not. The woman tells them that she has no idea what happened to klause, and she blames herself for it. She tells the men to stop eating so fast, and to give him a bath right away. She also tells them to remember her nephew Hermann, who died of tuberculosis a year ago. She says that she will be their success, but that they will all die. They go back to work and find that the men are asleep. They decide to blow up the wall of the grotto, and then they will study Conrad's manuscript.
