About This Chapter
The next morning, the group returns to the ship and finds that the ship's captain has left for the Mediterranean Sea to search for Nemo. The captain tells the group that Nemo has asked them to wait for him, and that he will pay them for their "impertinence" . The group asks the captain if he has seen Nemo, and the captain replies that he has, but that they must wait for Nemo to return. He tells them that Nemo's men have been in the Mediterranean for 700 years, and they have been using their own swords to attack the sea monsters. The men ask the captain where Nemo is, and he replies that Nemo is the son of God, the "one who brings dryness" , and brings moisture from the earth to his mouth. He says that he learned this lesson in his dream, which he describes as "delightful bedtime." The captain says that Nemo did not heed the warning that the deserters were gathering to trap the demon in a trap, and so they killed him. The narrator says that his head hurts, and his body aches like "all hell." He tells the captain that he belongs to a family that vanished into "cursed night," and that one of his ancestors was a high priest who ordered the destruction of his people. The priest was overcome by the fear of death, and fled, but he did not kill himself. The party is hopeful that they will find Nemo, but the captain tells them to take a look at the sea, as he thinks he has "picked up a type -- b4 contact."
