About This Chapter
In the morning, Kmper tells the others that he has been bitten by a scorpion. He tells them that he will try to draw out the venom, but that he cannot understand the language of the scorpion's sting. He asks the witch doctor for another dose of the antivenom, but the doctor refuses to give him any more. He says that the only way to stop the scorpion is to shoot him. He promises to wait for the day when he will have to kill all the scorpions, and then he will be rich by then. The witch doctor tells him that he is wasting his time on him, and that he should not go around and be a "new germany" . He warns her that she will be immensely dead if she does not kill the scorpion. She reminds him of the death of Otto, who was killed by the same scorpion as he was. She says that she hopes that she can save her husband's life by killing the scorpion, but she warns him not to interfere in the matter. She also warns him that if the whole thing collapses, all the work they have been doing will have been done for nothing. She tells him to take advantage of his time with his wife, and to lower the chamber.
