In this chapter, de John explains that the search for the bomb is the top priority for all of his forces. He tells us that in 1962, the Russians conducted a high-altitude test of an electromagnetic pulse. This was the first time that humans had been able to communicate with each other in real time. The Russians tested this pulse at 180 miles above the ground, and de John believes that this is the bomb that could destroy the human race in the distant future.
