Dr. Wingate and his wife, Dorothy, have returned to the mist country, where they are welcomed by the g-rakh, the seventh-born god of the mists. They are not allowed to eat or drink, and they are forbidden to speak to one another. They do not want to disturb the ceremony of the rebirth of the dead, which is a sacred ceremony performed by the gods on the seventh day of each lunar cycle.
