About This Chapter
Beneker asks why kurtz would want to participate in the rebirth ceremony. He says that he is dying and wants to know what the secret is. He believes that being reborn will help his body regenerate itself. He imagines that a man like Jeff would go through the ceremony and save himself. The natives live dozens of lives as a result of the ceremony, he says. He tells them that they are crazy to leave homeo shelters. They say that they will be there for the rebirth. They are the first humans in the world to film this, he tells them. He asks if they can believe it. They tell him that they heard a loud echo from the mountains, and they are not sure if the sulidor or the nildor will be extras in their big movie. They said that they did not come this far, and braved all that danger just to witness this. He thinks that it is because of the blood flowing into the valley. He wonders if it is the bacteria that make the ground red in the red valley. The sulidor and the nildoor are all doing it, he thinks. They have stopped. He thanks them and asks them to come with him. They do, and he says that they do not belong here. He reminds them that his wife is a scientist and that he also wants to be a part of a rebirth ceremony as well. He warns them not to use the ceremony to settle scores.
