About This Chapter
Book Two opens with a description of a time when "the ancient kami" ruled the world. He was a symbol of shogun supremacy, but he knew that there was still one obstacle left for the shogun to clear: the goddess Tenaga. The rain had soaked the wood of the fishermen, who bend it to make a boat. The man who bends the wood is Tamura, and he tells Tamura that he is a poor fisherman and that Tamura is arrogant. Tamura tells him that he knows what he is talking about and that he should tell Tamura what he knows. He tells the man that he will give him everything he needs. The Tamuras are afraid that the kami are running away, but Tamura assures them that they have the loot. He says that they will drink to Tamura's health if Tamura changes his mind. They go to the red lantern district of Gojome, where they find Tamura telling them the same story every time he goes there. The narrator tells us that he was thinking about the mask of Fudo, and that the truth is that the mask is still annoying. He asks Tamura to tell him what he wants. He wants to know the story of the netsuke that Fudo gave his sister, but she could not possibly know it, so he must go home and tell her.
