About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he was scared of the earthquake. He was worried about his beasts, who were in the irradiated area. He told himself that it was not fair to just leave them there. The narrator says that matsumura, a construction worker, thought he was going home, but he was too hungry to stop pushing. He says that there will be enough food for everyone, and that they are coming to wish him a good night. He tells his mother that he is okay, and they are going to move into his house. He explains that namazu, a giant catfish, has been holding up the whole of Japan. The god, kashima, keeps him in his place by planting a sword in his head. He tosses violently, and this is why Japan shakes. He warns him not to be afraid, and he tells him to stay with his grandparents. He asks if they have electricity at their place, and says that they don't have anything there either. He is worried that the earthquake will take a long time to get it back up and running.
