In this short scene, we are introduced to the sleeping niece of the Governess. The Governess is in bed with her niece when her uncle comes in and begins to tease her about her flirting with other men. He tells her that she is making a "peculiar grind" and that he will slap her if she does not stop. When she tries to slap him, he slaps her and she slaps him back.
