About This Chapter
Now that the earthquake has passed, it's time for the narrator to talk about it. He tells us that he can't go to school anymore because of the earthquake, but he'll be able to visit nakano later that day. He says that he's so glad that he didn't have to go through what he went through, because he'd have to deal with all the people who thought he was crazy for going to school during lunch break. He's not the only one who thinks that way, either. The other students, he says, are just as crazy as he is, and they're not even allowed to go to class anymore. He wonders if there's anything seriously wrong with them, and he wonders if they'd be better off without him. He feels like he would have to bear all of this mistreatment for the rest of his life, and that's why he won't ever go back to school. He thinks that the other students are more worthy than him, and so they'll get a day's rest before they have to face the same treatment again. The narrator thinks about the earthquake and wonders if everyone else in the world is afraid of him, or if they just want to kill him. And then he thinks about all of the people in the other world who are scared of him. They don't even have time to wait for him to die before they attack him again. He doesn't want to run away from them, either, and if he does run away, he will fight back against them. He imagines that if the earthquake continues for a long time, the whole world will panic, and the narrator will have to keep out of the other side of the world because of his delusions and hallucinatory episodes. He also thinks about a guy who took a classmate, threw him off, and was crying from the incident, and now he
