About This Chapter
In this short scene, the two young lovers discuss their love for one another. The narrator tells us that he is about to graduate from college and that he and his friend have booked a two-hundred-dollar inn in the area. He asks if he can show him the way to the inn, and the narrator tells him that it is a good thing that he found him while he was finishing his new book. He tells the narrator that he can clearly see his "i'm human" , and he is glad that he decided to come to the hot springs. He says that his girlfriend thought of him as "a college experience" . He is happy to have found a place to escape from his girlfriend, who has been "flighty lately" and has sent him a text saying that she has broken up with him. He wonders if something happened to cause her to leave, and she replies that she hasn't even left the house yet. He thinks that this is a perfect place to "brain storm," and he says that he feels lighter now after all, although he doesn't call it a break-up. He hopes that his painting of his love for his friend will bring him closer to her.
