About This Chapter
After a few months of living with his boss, Spenser decides he's ready to give up his life as a single guy. He's proud of his accomplishments, like getting into a top-notch university. He and his boss decide to buy a house and buy a car. They're going to buy it right away, because they want to make sure they have enough money to pay for it when they get back to work. They don't tell anyone about it, but Spensers is so proud of himself that he doesn't even want to say anything. He tells his boss that he'll spend the night at the restaurant, and then he tells his buddy that he wants to go back to his old life as an independent person. He says that he didn't want to have any bad blood between them, but that he can't bear the thought of being alone again. He promises to find someone to love and support him, and he finds his new friend, who he calls "the gorgeous story" of his life . He asks why people couldn't see his ambition and potential, hidden behind his loneliness and shadows, and how he'd be happy to have him as a friend instead of a rival. He praises his friend's family for always believing him at home, and says that's the only thing that makes him happy. He goes to his boss's office to pack some snacks and go to his office, where all the other employees are admiring him. He compares his friend to an "unrefined gemstone"
