This chapter opens with a conversation between the young master and his wife. The young master tells his wife that he has just witnessed his stepfather's anger at being invited to dinner with his family. He tells her that he does not need to maintain a "superficial harmonious relationship" with his stepfather, who is in a higher position of power than he is. He says that he and his father do not like each other, and that his mother still believes that her new home is happy and joyful. He then asks his wife why she stopped the car again, and she replies that she is not trying to force her to do anything. She tells him that he is her woman, and no one can "force her" to do what she does not want to do. She says that she just wants to tell him that things like this will not happen again. She then asks her husband why he is so dressed up for the dinner, and he replies that he will scare the child if he tells her the truth. He also says that his wife has just gotten married and that the child might not accept the news of her father's identity at once. He wants to look at her, and if he can, he will not let her know he is related to her by blood.
