About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a dream in which the old race has been transformed into humans. The old race, the narrator tells us, has been living on the earth for thousands of years, but it has never been able to adapt to life on the other side of the world. The narrator tells the audience that the day finally came when humans were able to make their presence felt on the world's surface. He tells them that the meeting between the two men will take place in the palace at Malamordha, and that he will leave his body there for nine days. He says that he has seen the sea and the cliffs of Khourg tower, and he remembers that he was on a spiritual journey when he saw the sea rise out of a fog. He remembers that the doors hung on rusted hinges, and the gardens were empty. Suddenly, he sees the sea right in front of him. He asks his father what he should do with the peasants, and his father tells him that they have already lost four of their men, and they should shut up or he will have his tongue ripped out. He then tells his wife that they should think about what to do with them, since they will be hunted like wild animals. He also tells her that they will have to paint the wings of blood with their remains, and it is a shame that they did not prove their mettle on the wall. He swears he will avenge his father, and then he asks his wife if she still wants to take care of the little tart. She says that she has nothing to say, but now she regrets what she did, and she asks him if he is still rejecting her. He replies that he is, but that he really hopes the Samvatas will kill him tonight. He feels that they are going to kill him, and so he begs his father to show him his prisoner. He knows that Thursa is trying to draw him to him, but he also knows that he must go to see skalla.
