The chapter opens with a description of the "unprecedented tectonic shifts" that have taken place in the world over the past few months. Adam and Elakshi have been trying to find a way to rid themselves of their collective consciousness. The founder of the lodge, a Frenchman named Frederick, claimed that he could "disperse collective consciousness energy" through physical therapy. Unfortunately for the lands, however, the Frenchman imprisoned adam and tried to use Elakshi's power for his own purposes. Elakshi fled from the two men and found herself outside the safe radius that she must keep with adam. They brought back their powers together in a spectacularly destructive fashion. The chapter ends with a soliloquy by adam in which he laments the fact that they are forty miles from a gas station. He is glad someone is there, and he is glad that the mystery man is not dead. He tells the vampire that he is not one of their victims and that he can see his pain in the vampire's eyes. He asks the vampire to let him see what is going on. The vampire says that he knows what he has done, but he wants to wait for the other patients to help him. He suggests that the vampire wait with the newcomers and then he will be able to find another name for himself.
