About This Chapter
In this short scene, Huck and his companions are on their way to the Greek island of Illyria, where they will spend the rest of their vacation. Huck tells his companions that he has been looking forward to their trip to Europe for a long time, but now that they have arrived, they have been forced to spend all their time touring museums instead of exploring the Greek countryside. Huck complains that the professor who has been teaching them about Greek history has dragged them to "ruin after ruin" , and that they are not interested in learning anything new about the country. He asks one of the girls, Rebecca, to find him and ask his parents if they would like to continue their trip. Rebecca says that she would be happy to do so, since she has been studying Greek history for the past two weeks. The girls agree that they should continue their tour, and Huck tells them that he is certain that they will be credited with finding a sunken galley in the sea. He says that he will report the discovery to the professor, who will then kick them out of the island. He tells the girls that they must report this because the professor is closing the museum, and he is sure that the scholars will be blamed for finding the sunken galley. Huck says that his mother has told him that the museum is a waste of his time and money, but that he must not forget where he came from, since his father did the same thing. He explains that he was given a jar containing "the misfortunes of man," but that it is not a box, but rather a sealed jar. Huck and the girls are getting ready to leave the island when they hear the sound of a charter boat calling from the nearby city of Thessaloniki. They decide to get off the boat and wait for an order.
