About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the third strain of dengue is on the rise in the slums of Rio de Janeiro. The heat and the mosquitoes are making it impossible for people to get out of the house. The only people who can afford to go out in the heat are those who have lost a lot of money in the stock market crash. Professor Gomens tells us that one of his colleagues, a doctor named Nestor Golochea, has been shot and killed in the slum. Gomens says that the bullet didn't kill the man, but merely wounded him. He says that if the man had been robbed, he would have walked around the streets for long enough to get robbed. The professor explains that the only way to stop the epidemic is to prevent people from contracting the disease in the first place. If a person is bitten three times, he or she will contract the same strain of the disease. If the person has already contracted the disease twice, the person will be doubly infected. If they are both infected, they will both be at risk for contracting the same disease.
