About This Chapter
The chapter opens with the narrator bemoaning the fact that he's too weak to do much damage. He compares himself to a "weak ass" who has to work harder to make his actions worth his zoom. He wonders what he has gotten himself into, and wonders if he has been tricked into thinking that his actions are worth much more than they really are. He realizes that he has made a mistake in thinking that he is immune to the effects of his own actions, and he wonders how he will be able to escape from his predicament. He thinks about the boxes of cells that are packed into the body and wonders how they can be separated from one another. He also wonders about the way in which the cells are able to communicate with each other. The narrator wonders if the cells can communicate with other cells in the body, and if they can even communicate with one another, since they are so different from each other in their ability to communicate. He then wonders if there is one remaining cell that can be destroyed, and the narrator wonders aloud if he is going to be guilt-ridden for lying to the narrator. He says that he realizes he is a cell, too, and that he can cause pangs in the conscience of his fellow human beings. He asks the narrator to remember that he will someday return to his body, but he reminds himself that it is only a matter of time before he dies.
