This is a locked chapterChapter 8 Cancer Cells (Part I)
About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a description of a "horrible" scene in which a cell is chased by a "weird looking one" . It is clear that the cell is a neutrophil, a type of white blood cell, and that the killer cell is cytotoxic t-cells, or "killer cells" , which are specialized cells that destroy foreign cells. The narrator tells us that this is not the first time he has seen a neutrophil kill a cell, but it is the first he's seen it happen in such a way. He tells the narrator that he has been trying to tell the others about it all along, but he didn't tell them sooner. He says that he'll take them to the scene right now. He's got some time on his hands, he says, and he doesn't want the others to see what's going on. He wants to see if they're really killing each other, and if they don't, he wants to kill them both. He asks the narrator to take him there, and the narrator tells him that they'll be able to see it. He also says that it's a bad omen for the two of them to be fighting each other and that they should talk about it, out of "consideration" for the killer and his friends. He adds that he was hoping that they would take care of them at once, but they didn'T realize that they were defective cancer cells. This leads to the tumor spreading to vital parts of the body, and endangering the lives of the organism.
