About This Chapter
The next morning, the three men discuss Sel's plan to regenerate his own personality. They realize that Sel has been stripped of his status as a "shipboard ai" , and that they have been the only ones to rescue the people in the eighth cave. They decide to go back to their own cave, or to meet their end here. They wonder if the others are still in the 13th cave, and decide to search for them. They learn that the Toha Heavy Industries have unilaterally terminated their agreement with them, and have begun to explore the interior of the plants. If they do not contact central ai, they will not be able to confirm the existence of a "net terminal gene" . Sel says that he was able to "seal away consciousness" during the ten years he spent in the fourth and fifth caves. He says that they will need to convince central to abide by their agreement again, or they will find Sel and the others.
