About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a description of a country in which everyone can live in a "carnivore zone" . This means that people live in different parts of the country, so they have different lifestyles. Having a goat as an employee of a bookshop is rare in this part of the world. The narrator tells us that the only place where a goat can work is in the "Carnivore Zone" because he has a talent that is rare among goats. He says that he can "taste the story" within the books. He tells the narrator that he has always wanted to be a "bookseller" and that he wants his goat brethren to be like him. He also tells him that the childrens book author he works with has a problem with the selection of books in his shop because he eats a lot of books a day. He asks the narrator not to bring his lip, and the narrator tells him to go home before it gets dark so that he won't be caught. He then tells the story of how he became a bookseller because he wants to share his love of books with his friends and family.
