The scene opens with Alphonse's kiss to the lips of the sleeping man. The narrator is overcome with emotion at the sight of the kiss. He is so touched by the kiss that he cries out, "Whoa, what's happening here?" . He asks what the other man is talking about, and the narrator tells him that it is the kiss itself that excites him the most. He tells the narrator to take it easy on the kiss, and to "smile aaa" . Then he asks if the kiss is painful, and she tells him it is. She tells him to drop what he has just told her, and then she begins to cry. She says that she got drunk and screamed at him, and that she wants to die. She wants to go wash up before the man wakes up, so she rises up and begins to flinch. She is so upset that she does not stop. She cries out that she cannot just stay still, because the kiss will be painful
