In this chapter, we meet the new Hostess at the club where she works. She asks the manager to show her around the place while she goes to call the boss. The Hostess tells us that she's been feeling lonely lately, so she asks if the manager can play her a song while she waits for him. The manager agrees, and the Hostess tells him that some of the other Hostesses are actually working, so they can borrow some clothes. She also tells the manager that her daughter, Mika, has just moved to Japan, and she doesn't have anywhere to sleep. She tells him to let her in on the secret that he's already told her, and he agrees. He also tells her that the art books he brought with him are now in the mail, and that he needs to return them for an in-exchange date. He tells the Hostess that he can't wait to see Mika again, because he'd rather have a different hostess for the new girl who's just arrived. He says that Mika's first day at work is tomorrow, so he wants her to send the girl to his table, but he'll have to wait until the next day for her to arrive. He then tells her to put her eyes back in her mouth if she isn't satisfied with the hostess's service, because she'll lose her job if she fails to be satisfied. Hostesses should always be kind to each other, he says, because they'll all be fired if they don't deliver on their promises. Hostess says that she has a sudden cough, and Hostesses tend to get sick when they're waiting for Hostesses.
