In this chapter, we learn that the same generation as the first disobeyed the creator's order and lived in exile. When the creator gave them some time to think things over, they began to live on their own. The robot who was supposed to be the new master of the ship tells us that he came into the life of the robot because he wanted to serve the creator better. He says that the robot kept hanging his head low and had a past that he couldn't part with. He also says that a lot of the problems the robot asked him were not answered. The first time he felt failure, he says, was because he had written in his program. The moment he got thrown away, everything seemed like it was going to change.
