The chapter opens with a flashback to the previous chapter, in which the narrator explains that he has been sentenced to death by execution for his part in the insurance company robbery. He is now nineteen years old, and he has no idea how he will survive his sentence. He wonders if he will be able to take care of himself in prison. The narrator tells us that the four suspects in the case are all blood-ivores, or high-ranking law enforcement officials. The case of the company robbery is closed with the arrest of all four suspects one month later. The young narrator is shocked to learn that he is to be executed within two weeks.
