About This Chapter
It's freezing outside, and Jim wakes up to find that his father has seen him. He tells Jim that he's sure that his fiancee hates him, but he'll take care of it for her sake. Jim says that he interprets his father's comments to mean that he doesn't want to live the life he wants to live. He says that if his fiancee wasn't her fiance, his father wouldn't have changed so much. He also says that after that, he won't be able to stop Jim from living the way he wants. Jim asks Jim if he can stay in his room, since it's so beautiful outside. Jim tells him that if they got snowed in, he'd let him stay. He asks if he could cook for them, since his fiancee is so good at cooking. He's amazed that her cooking isn't as good as his own. He thinks that she's the first of her friends to try new recipes, and he hopes she'll be the first to taste them. Jim thanks his fiancee for coming back, and says that it was nice to see her cook again. He wonders if her kindness is motivated by some ulterior motive, but says that there's nothing to be found in her kindness.
