About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the psy-comms are soldiers with "special mental abilities beyond that of normal men" . They are men like Mark Levey, who has "capillarity" and "telekinetic skills" , and David Jerold, who is a "best friend" of Levey's. So the question remains: is Levey alive? And who is the mysterious figure that he was carrying? Levey tells us that he likes to cut through the buzzard pass, just one foot ahead of the other. He says that killing him would be like killing me every time I wake up, but that it's better to be alone than to be out on the street alone. He also says that he doesn't need insurance, since he's "completely solvent" and has a "reservoir credit" on his arm. The doctor tells Levey that they're entering with two "uninsureds" seeking treatment. The first patient is female and has shrapnel wound to her neck. The second patient is a woman with "vital signs weak" and a "wound to the neck" that seems to indicate "radiation poisoning and infection." The doctor says that Levey will be taken to a nearby hospital. He's going to patch her up, and she'll get a little more out of it. He tells her that there's a lot of soldiers in the hall, and they'll have to get her out of there ASAP. Levey says he'll make sure that they get through to the doctor.
