About This Chapter
The scene opens with a soliloquy by Madame Bovary, in which she laments the fact that she is unable to perform her role as the lead singer in the play because she cannot bear to be the center of attention. She asks Bovary to give her a flower to give to her lover, but he refuses, saying that he has already given the flower to another man. She tells him that he is welcome to give the flower back to him as long as he holds tight to the script, but she has a bad feeling that he does not want to be in the audience for the performance. The audience cheers loudly as they hear the song, "Mo'ou's Flower," which is the first original song by Monsieur Bovary. He tells the audience that he rejected the man whom he loves in order to deal with his rival in love. The song is a remembrance of someone important to him, and he hopes that he will be able to hold the flower well this time. He asks the audience if the performance is an acting scene, and they respond that it is. Madame Poins asks him if he wants to receive the flowers on stage. He says he does, and then he is shocked to see that the man has come to deliver the flowers. He hugs the man
