The chapter opens with a conversation between the two girls. The narrator asks the girl if she would like to buy a CD for herself and her brother. The girl replies that she would, but that she doesn't want to be a burden to her brother, since he is her own brother. She tells the narrator that she wants to go outside and shake it off. She also tells him that she is afraid of the insects that gather in the air and that her brother is the oldest son in the household. She says that she feels like she has found her tribe in her own "maggoty way," but that her mother is still her mother. The two girls talk about how they feel like they are welcome in their new home, and the narrator tells the girl that he thinks she is a beautiful girl. He also tells her that the girl at the last party was actually her, and that she can now say that she was actually a girl at that party. The girls talk more about how she feels she has gained some self-confidence in her new life, and how her brother has not yet left the house.
