About This Chapter
It's the first time the narrator has ever been on a date, and he's not used to the idea of being alone with someone. He wants to be with someone, but he doesn't know how to get there. He's going to go on a "date" with someone in the next few days, but first he has to figure out who the girl is. He asks her if she's his "friend" , and she says she isn't. She's taller than he is, and her hair is longer than he expected. He thinks she looks like a cross between a man and a woman, and that she radiates a "mature androgynous" vibe. He wonders if she was able to tour Japan at all, and when she says yes, he thinks she was mad because she wasn't paying attention to him. He feels intimidated by the guy flirting with her earlier, and after seeing how popular she is, he wonders if he wanted friends, or something "miraculous interest" in her. He tells her that he has low self-esteem and that everything he does is a reflection of his superior social status. He says he should stop putting himself down and pride things he does have, and says he'll come back the next time he sees her.
