About This Chapter
Four years have passed, and the robots have never gotten tired. They're happy, and they love each other. They used to think they were their enemies, but now they're their own best friend. They don't have to worry about what the council is doing, because they've done four major changes in the world. The first change was to make humans live longer and healthier. The second was to change the way humans think and act. The third was to create a new kind of robot, one that would be able to interact with humans in ways that would make them happy and healthy. The fourth was to find a way to keep humans safe. The only way to do this was to get rid of maricela, who is the only survivor of the wolf creek prison. The council will never know about her, because she's a natural child. She's the first of two humans that the council has created since the inception of the robot. They can't kill her, and she'll be protected by the council. The chapter ends with a discussion of the word utopia, and how it came from the word "utopian" . When he was a kid, he was raised on a right-wing Christian philosophy, but he's now a left-wing atheist. He's started to wonder why the profit motive is so important. Equality is a myth, he says, and it's just a part of the story. It's also a difference between segregation and separation. The elder white people are the oldest living people. Equality isn't a natural state, says the narrator, because humans are irrational. History has shown that a percentage of humans are violent throughout recorded history. The narrator is glad that things are changing. He wants to do something new. He wanted to do a story that truly had human interests in mind. One of the things that's not coming out soon is that the robot's appearance has been changed. He asks an old pastor if he thinks robots are connected to the future, but the pastor says he doesn't know. Brain plasticity is a term that describes how the brain changes over time. It describes how humans adapt to new things, like language, mathematics, and so on. He chose to live in a racially diverse school because of its diversity. What shocked him was that the school completely self-segregates by race.
