In this chapter, Dr. Bledsoe explains that he has made a lot of mistakes in his life, and he wants to make sure that his mistakes are not repeated. He wants to build a better world for his daughter. He tells her that she is the first person of mixed race to live in the modern world, and that she will be seen as separate from the rest of the community. He says that he wishes that they were born into the same world, but that they will not be able to choose their own time. He reminds her that he and her sister are going to eat the food from the four pillars, which is a false foundation for equality. He feels that he can no longer live without his mother. He wishes that he could say that the run was the last, but it was. He and his sister will grab a torch and find the remains of their mother and father. They will return if they can. They should not be eating the food they are eating, he says, but they should be transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
