In this short scene, we learn that we're back at the beginning of the chapter, where we've already seen the destruction of the giant cannon. We're told that the cannon is going to be destroyed before it's too heavy, so that's a good sign. We also learn that the guy who's about to die is also going to die. This is a big deal, because it means that the other guys are going to have to die too, too. The cannon is about to be blown up, and the guys are all psyched. They're psyched because they're going to get to play with the cannon again. But then they realize that they don't really know what to do with themselves now that they've destroyed the cannon.
