About This Chapter
The swordsman and the songstress meet in the middle of a raging river, and the swordsman drowns. The songstress tries to calm him down, telling him that if the river floods, they'll have to flee to the Assem Chief's house. The swordsmen agree, but they can't keep their promise to live together as two normal men and women. The Chief asks him what he's going to do with his life now that the river is going to flood, and he says he'll go to his mother and tell her what's up. The chief asks him if he plans to sacrifice himself for the sake of saving the village. He says he doesn't want his mother, his wife, or the people of the village to be devoured to death. He's not a singer, he says, but he wants to save the one person he loves.
