In this short scene, we learn that the young man in question is a student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He has just announced that he will be leaving the university, and we are told that he is a "young looking guy" . The narrator asks us to imagine what it must be like to be in love with a young man. We are also told that this is the first time that the narrator has ever been in love, and that he has never been alone with anyone before. He asks the narrator if he is the only person in the world who knows about the impending departure, and the narrator says that she is, too. He then asks her if she is sure that the man she is having sex with is going to quit his job at the university. She says that he hasnt yet told her, but that she knows he is leaving because he is "just going to leave out saying anything" , and she is so upset that she can't believe that he would do such a thing
