He doesn't want to be the center of attention, but he does want to make sure that he isn't the only one who feels this way. He also wants to know if the person who dumped him was really into him. The narrator says that he was, but that he accidentally took the keys out of the house while he was away. He says that's why he came back to get them, because he heard the person he dumped talking about how much he loved her, and he wanted to confess his love for her. He thinks about it for a bit, and then he decides that maybe he was just shy
