In this chapter, we are introduced to a new character named Corin. He is described as a "lowlife" who is "physically and mentally healthy" . Corin tells us that he is a "loan shark" and that he takes in people who are "drowned in debt" or who are in similar straits. He tells Corin that he has a job for him and that Corin is a regular customer at the loan shark's place. He asks Corin if he thinks Corin will quit soon and Corin says that he does not think so.
