About This Chapter
Book 2 opens with a flashback to the events of the previous chapter. In this scene, Jean is in the attic of the house where he lives with his sister, Elzebeth, and their dog, Dorette. He's worried about Dorette, who's been moping around the house, and about the wolves that have been living in the house. He wants to know what's going on, but he can't figure out where they've all been. He asks her to bring Dorette to his room so he can warm him up. She tells him to stay and she'll give him a warm meal. She also tells him that the wolves have been adopted by her sister and that they're going to have to pay for the one that's coming to kill him. She'll take him for an idiot, she tells him. The wolves have set fire to the house and want to kill Jean, but she's not going to let them do it. She says that she saw the wolves in her dream and that her real dad wouldn't let them kill her. She asks him to thank General voracek and the lieutenants who've been bringing in new captives. He thanks them and says that the house is crawling with crazy people. He says that he'll kill them if they spoil his plans.
