About This Chapter
In this short scene, the two young men discuss the future. The narrator tells us that he wants to be an "airline pilot" . He says that his mother has already brought him a magazine, but he doesn't know how to use a racket. He's going to be the best in the world in a couple of years. The two men discuss how they haven't been able to return to the village for a long time because of all the problems they've had at home. The village is peaceful, they say, and it's good that they're able to spend so much time there. They're happy to be back in the village, but they'll have to spend another year there before they can return to their parents' house. They don't have a lot of money, though, so they decide to stay for another year. They clean up their room, and the narrator says that he hasn't realized that the racket is still there. He tells his mother that he's decided to spend the rest of his life playing tennis, and that he needs her approval to do so. He asks her to lend him some money so he can get out of the village. She tells him that she's had enough of the partying, and they need to borrow some money to get back on their feet. She says that she and her husband have run out of cash to keep partying. She's sorry to disappoint her son, but she says that tennis is the only thing that keeps him going. He realizes that his goal was to get his mother's approval, so he kept playing because he needed her approval.
