In this chapter, we are introduced to the young protagonist of the novel. He is introduced as "Cheong Podo" , and we learn that he is a student at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea. He has just finished his first day of class, and he is worried that he will not be able to make it to class because of a car accident. He tells Yonsei that his father has died in a car crash, and that he has been forced to move out of Yonsei because of his father's debts. He asks Yonsei to let him go immediately, but Yonsei refuses, saying that he must wait until the following day.
