About This Chapter
The next morning, the two of them go for a walk. The narrator says that he's not sure what to make of the other's strange behavior, but he does know that it's probably because he hasn't been around much lately. He asks the narrator to tell him what's bothering him, and the narrator tells him that it was because of a guy who tried to enter his house and claim that he was a "cat with a debt" to repay him. He's worried that this is the reason why they're not together, but the narrator says he doesn't think it was the only reason. He says that the guy has always acted selfishly and insolently, and that's how he got into the house in the first place. He tells the narrator that he came to see him because his secretary found out that he had done an "impromptu inspection" of the house. He apologizes for not being able to contact him that night, but says that his feelings for the other have not changed. He wants to take the narrator home, and he says he'll be happy to do so. He adds that he knows that the house isn't where he wants to be, but that he has decided to go there anyway.
