In this chapter, the servant tells the master that she has heard rumors that the man she works for is in love with a girl. The servant tells him that she is not sure if the rumor is true or not, but she does know that her master loves a rumor that the girl is "quite manly" . She tells him to be patient with her master because he is always going out looking for work. She also tells him he has not been drinking at home in a while, and she tells him she has a slight fever. He tells her to take her time, and they never said anything about each other, but surely he is doing this because of her master . They never said how they felt about one another, but he seems to like her. He asks her to stop idling and to come with him. She says she is his "substitute" , and that he is cruel to her because she is so similar to the man he works for. He makes her limp because he looks like him, and he makes her love him. He says that he thought he would never love again, but when he teased him, he almost cried to make him hate him.
