It's the summer before high school, and the narrator wakes up to find out that his dad has had a heart attack. He's not sure what to say. He starts hanging out with a guy named yukio, who's a friend of his mom's boyfriend's. The two of them decide to get to know each other, but the narrator can't figure out how to say anything. He asks what kind of guy he'd like to hang out with. . The narrator tells us that he's always wanted to be friends with his dad's friend, but now that summer vacation is over, he doesn't have the energy to ask . He decides to go to school instead. He goes to the house of his friend , who is an assistant professor at a university. He tells the narrator that he needs to go back to school ASAP, because the school isn't doing as well as he expected. He also tells her that his friend's heart stopped beating when he left the house. He says that if his heart hadn't stopped beating, he would be dead right now. He then tells the story of how, if he were to die right now, he wouldn't want to be second to his dad. He hopes that someday, he'll be able to win his friend over.
