In this chapter, we are introduced to a young woman who works as a prostitute at a brothel. She tells us that the owner of the establishment is always cruel to the poor, and that she has never seen a change in his attitude toward the rich. She also tells us about a young man who works at the establishment and who is rumored to be a student at a local high school. The young man's guardian has told the brothel owner that the young man has been seen entering the establishment. The brothel owner tells the young woman that he is going to get him drunk so that he will go away without any trouble.
